Aims: Severe injuries experienced by children with physical disabilities are a significant determinant of their functional ability. This study aimed to investigate whether the association between the degree of injury and functional independence in children with physical impairments is mediated by rehabilitative nursing care.
Instrument & Methods: This descriptive-correlational, cross-sectional study was conducted on 420 children in Thi-Qar Governorate, Iraq, from April to July 2025. Using rigorous random sampling, 420 children with injury-related physical disabilities, aged 6 to 18 years, were recruited from hospitals and rehabilitation facilities. The Functional Independence Measure for Children, the Rehabilitation Nursing Care Scale, and the Pediatric Injury Severity Scale were used to collect data. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 28, utilizing Pearson correlation coefficients and regression analyses.
Findings: Injury severity was negatively correlated with rehabilitation nursing care and functional independence (r=-0.68 to -0.72; p<0.001), whereas nursing care was positively associated with functional independence (r=0.79; p<0.001). The relationship between injury severity and functional independence was partially mediated by rehabilitation nursing care (B=-1.01; 95% CI [-1.19, -0.84]), with the overall model explaining 69% of the variance.
Conclusion: Rehabilitation nursing care mediates the relationship between injury severity and functional independence among children with physical disabilities.
